Why You'll Love This Air Fryer Breakfast Recipe
- It's hands-off. Once the french toast goes into the air fryer, you can walk off and prepare yourself a big cup of coffee for breakfast!
- It's the perfect recipe if you're craving a small serving of french toast. My air fryer fits around 5 to 6 sticks so it's perfect if you want one batch. You can also cook in a few batches if you're cooking for more than one. Also, if you have a more square air fryer basket or air fryer tray, you can definitely fit much more!
- All you need are a few kitchen staples and you'll have these air fryer french toast sticks ready in no time.
Ingredients You'll Need
- bread — the thicker the bread, the better! Older, slightly stale bread is great as it soaks up the custard nicely.
- eggs — you can't have french toast without eggs!
- milk — I use whole milk but you can use 1% or 2% milk.
- vanilla — I highly recommend using real vanilla extract instead of artifical extract.
- cinnamon — I love the toasty, warm flavour that cinnamon provides.
- salt — you need just a pinch.
How To Make Air Fryer French Toast Sticks
- Cut the bread into sticks. I usually cut mine into three.
- In a bowl, combine the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until fully combined.
- Dip the bread into the mixture. Don't let it sit in the mixture.
- Add the dipped toast sticks into a lined air fryer basket.
- Air fry for 5 to 6 minutes. You can flip the toast sticks and air fry it for another minute if the bottom isn't as golden as you'd like.
- Serve with some maple syrup and powdered sugar if you'd like.
Tips and Notes
- You will need to line the air fryer basket with parchment. I've tried air frying these french toast sticks without parchment and the bread practically morphed into the grates in the air fryer basket and the custard burnt into the basket and the bottom of the air fryer. It was a pain to clean.
- Avoid oversoaking the bread as it will fall apart.
- I use plain white bread but broiche, sourdough, and challah are great for french toast sticks.
- You can make the bread more stale by leaving it out, uncovered the night before.
- It's normal for the cinnamon to clump in the mixture.
I do not recommend stacking the french toast sticks in the air fryer. They will be soggy! You want there to be room for the hot air to circulate between the french toast.
I've made this ahead of time and stored it in an airtight container in the fridge for around 3 to 4 days. Reheat them in the air fryer for a minute or two, until warmed through.
