Why You'll Love This Recipe
- You only need five ingredients (or less!). Opt for just olive oil instead of olive oil and butter if you want to cut the ingredients down to four.
- It's so easy to make! While you can skip searing the salmon in the skillet first, I love doing this step as it gives you a crispier skin.
- It truly goes with everything! You can even eat it on its own. I do that when I'm not in the mood to make anything else, as the salmon is filling on its own.
Ingredients You'll Need
- salmon fillets — I am using wild-caught salmon with the skin on, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand. If your fillets are frozen, make sure they're fully thawed before preparing this recipe.
- Dijon mustard — this adds a tangy, salty, spicy, and bold flavor to the salmon.
- everything but the bagel seasoning — everything bagel seasoning is simply the seasoning that is used on everything bagels: sesame seeds, both white and black, poppy seeds, dried onion and garlic flakes, and flakey sea salt. It has a salty and savory flavor.
- butter — I like the extra flavor that butter adds to the salmon skin.
- oil — the oil keeps the butter from burning.
How To Make This Everything Bagel Salmon
- Preheat the oven broiler.
- Pat dry the salmon fillets with paper towels.
- Spread the Dijon mustard on the top of the salmon and then sprinkle the everything but the bagel seasoning over the Dijon mustard to create a crust.
- To a cast iron skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and add the oil.
- Once the oil and butter mixture is hot, add the salmon to the skillet, skin-side down.
- Sear for 2 to 3 minutes before carefully transferring the skillet to the oven. Broil the salmon for 3 to 4 minutes or until the salmon is cooked to your preference.
Recipes Variations
- Skip the dijon mustard if you are not a fan. You can pour the seasoning into a shallow plate and press the tops of the salmon fillets into the seasoning to make them stick to the salmon.
Tips and Notes
- I was a little heavy-handed in the Dijon mustard, so the mustard can be seen in the photos, but keep in mind that too much Dijon can make the a little too salty. ½ to 1 tablespoon of Dijon is all you need per fillet, depending on the size of it.
- Make sure always to pat dry the salmon. Any moisture will cause the salmon to steam instead of sear.
- The oil and butter needs to be hot before you add the salmon fillets to it to ensure the salmon skin is delightfully crispy.
- Avoid moving the salmon once you've set them in the skillet. This way you don't risk tearing the salmon skin.
- You can easily double or triple the recipe, depending the size of your skillet.
The salmon’s internal temperature should reach 145°F (62°C). You can use a meat thermometer to check. If you do not have one, you can use a fork and flake the salmon to check. The salmon will flake easily if it's done.
