Why You'll Love This Slow Cooker Recipe
- While not as short of an ingredient list as a 3 ingredient slow cooker ham, this recipe calls for 5 easy ingredients!
- The recipe is not only delicious but also incredibly easy to make in the slow cooker. The most you have to do is baste the ham a couple of times but that's easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
- Since this recipe uses a spiral cut ham, there's less work when it comes time to serve! The difficult slicing has mostly been covered.
Ingredients You'll Need
- Dijon mustard — I love the tanginess it adds.
- pineapple juice — ham and pineapple goes perfectly together! Don't have pineapple juice? Try apple juice or orange juice!
- brown sugar — I prefer brown sugar or dark brown sugar. It helps thicken the glaze and adds a delightful sweetness to the crockpot ham.
- bone-in spiral cut ham — this is a precooked bone-in ham that's been sliced with a special spiral-slicing machine, so you get perfectly carved meat into perfectly thin slices while the ham stays intact.
- honey — like the brown sugar, honey adds sweetness and helps the glaze thicken.
- fresh herbs for garnish
How To Make This Slow Cooker Ham Recipe
- Stir together the Dijon mustard and pineapple juice. Set aside.
- Add the brown sugar evenly in the bottom of a large 7-8 quart slow cooker.
- Place the ham in the crockpot, cut side up.
- Pour honey over the top of the ham, covering it as evenly as possible.
- Pour the mustard pineapple juice mixture over the top of the honey-covered ham.
- Cover and cook on low heat for about 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F, basting with the glaze once an hour, making sure to get the glaze between the cuts.
- Serve with the liquid from the crockpot or to thicken the glaze, transfer it to a saucepan and simmer while stirring until it thickens to your liking.
- Decorate the serving platter with fresh herbs, then serve with the glaze.
Recipes Variations
- If you don't feel like basting the ham, you can place it cut-side down in the crockpot. You can have it cut-side up first, get the pineapple juice and honey in between the slices before flipping it.
- White sugar will give you a lighter colored glaze.
- If you don't have honey, you can use maple syrup.
- Feel free to use another mustard if you don't have Dijon mustard.
Tips and Notes
- The FDA recommends reheating a fully cooked ham to an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) before serving.
- Opt for a bone-in ham for better flavor and juiciness. The bone contributes to the overall taste during the slow cooking process.
- Basting the ham with its juices during cooking can enhance the flavor and keep it moist.
- If you'd like for your crockpot ham to look like it was oven baked (or if you'd just like some crispy edges), brush the entire ham with thickened glaze and then place it under the oven broiler for around 4 to 5 minutes before serving.
I suggest planning around ½ pound of boneless ham per person or ¾ pound of bone-in ham per person. So a 7 pound bone-in spiral ham would be perfect for around 9 people.
If you keep the ham in an airtight container in the refrigerator, it should stay fresh for around 3 to 5 days. Alternatively, you could freeze it for up to 3 or 4 months in a freezer-safe bag or container.
You can reheat leftover ham in the microwave, in your crockpot, or even in the oven. Save that glaze and reheat your ham with it!
