This sour cream and onion dip is so irresistible and shockingly easy to make with only a handful of ingredients! Perfect for the onion lover (or dip lover!) in your life, this creamy dip goes well with everything from chips, vegetables, bread, and more!

Inspired by my all-time favorite chip flavor, Ruffles Sour Cream and Onion, this sour cream and onion dip will have you drooling. It's so easy to make and it's always a crowd-pleaser. Make it for game day, a dip party, or just for yourself to enjoy!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • It's very easy to make! Simply cook down the onions and once its cooled, mix it well with sour cream and some seasoning!
  • It's perfect for sharing (or for enjoying by yourself like I frequently do). The most recent time I made this to share was for a dip party with some friends!
  • I'm obsessed with how this dip tastes. I love sour cream and onion chips and this is literally the dip version of it. It's creamy, tangy, and has the perfect amount of onion flavor.

Ingredients You'll Need

Ingredients needed to make sour cream and onion dip.
  • butter and oil — I use both butter and olive oil to cook the onions. The butter adds flavor and the oil keeps the butter from burning.
  • onion — I use a small yellow onion. Feel free to use a larger one if you want more bites of onion in your dip. I dice mine super finely as it makes cooking them a faster process and it keeps the dip from being too chunky.
  • sour cream — you can use full-fat or low-fat sour cream. I like using full fat when possible, as it makes the dip more rich and creamy.
  • seasoning — you will need garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, and salt.
  • Worcestershire sauce — I love the savory and sweet tangy flavor you get from Worcestershire sauce. The rich, umami flavor cuts through the sour cream and you won't be able to get enough of it.
  • chives — make sure to have some extra chives to garnish the dip with for a prettier presentation.

  • Add the butter and oil to a pot over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the diced onions.
  • Sauté for 10 minutes or until the onions are golden (but not caramelized). Set the onions aside to cool to room temperature.

  • To a mixing bowl, add the sour cream, cooled onions, garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and chives.
  • Mix until well combined. Let sit in the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes before garnishing with more chives and serve.

Recipes Variations

  • If you want sour cream and caramelized onion dip, simply keep cooking your onions until they're a deeper color! Check out this post on how to caramelize onions for more tips.
  • If you don't have Worcestershire sauce, you could add a splash of soy sauce instead.

Tips and Notes

  • Sometimes I cook the onions the night before and store it in the fridge in an airtight container until I'm ready to make the dip.
  • I highly recommend letting the dip sit before serving, as this really allows the flavors to meld together. If you have the time, I recommend making it the night before, so the flavors have more time to mingle.
  • This sour cream and onion dip is not just for dipping! You can also spoon it over my favorite chicken tacos, shrimp tacos, or fish tacos!
Is this the same as French onion dip?

Nope! French onion dip is usually made with French onion soup mix whereas this dip is made with freshly cooked onions and a blend of seasoning.

How do I store leftovers?

This dip keeps well for up to 4 to 5 days in the fridge in an airtight container. Give it a mix before serving.

Can I freeze this?

I haven't tried and don't recommend freezing this sour cream and onion dip.
